Ushio Shinohara, Boxing Painting Action(ca. 1960, boxing gloves, paint)Ushio Shinohara (born 1932 in Tokyo, Japan) is a Japanese artist whose mediums include performance art, painting, and sculpture. His mother was a Japanese style painter who graduated Woman’ s Art University (Joshi Bijutu Daigaku) and his father was a tanka poet who was taught by Wakayama Bokusui. In 1952, Shinohara majored in oil painting at the Tokyo Art University in 1952. After studying with Hayashi Takeshi, he left the university in 1957 to submit his works to the Yomiuri Andepandan Exhibition, a stronghold of young artists. As many of his creations cannot be fit into a canvas, the majority of Shinohara’s works pose the question, “Is this Art?” An example would be Boxing Painting, wherein the artist dips boxing gloves in paint and hits a wall to make a painting (a mode of performance art, or action art, that Shinohara began in 1960). Shinohara is also well known for his “imitation art,” which imitated PopArt, and his “Hanamari Series.” In 1969, Shinohara recieved a scholarship from Rockfeller foundation to go to the United States. He has lived and worked from New York City ever since then (“Ushio Shinohara.” Artist Hot News Museum Gallery)
